Staying Put

Staying Put

This week, Little Man and I stayed up at the lake. We were scheduled to close on a house 3 June, but that clearly didn’t work out. I decided to stay at the lake, so Little Man could get some quality Nanny time. He’s been missing her, especially since we are mostly up on weekends when she is working the food trailer. I do her recordkeeping and social media, so it is easiest for me to be with her to count her cash drawer and prepare her deposits, as opposed to being remote and doing it all. And, I’ve been helping with food prep as well the past few weeks, so she’s getting more done quickly.

Anyway…we did trail rides almost every day last week. We saw turkeys flying up into trees as we went past. The waterfall and dam were always highlights of the trips; Little Man always looks for the Rock Giants from Frozen 2 when we get to the dam. We took a drive up over the border to Shullsburg, Wisconsin on Thursday night. We went to this great little bar for dinner – the broasted chicken was to die for!

The weekend was just so darn hot. I do not like hot weather; I melt once it starts to get in the mid 70s. Saturday was just horrible. I had filled the kiddie pool, and the water got so hot so fast, it was just gross. But Little Man loved to play in it, so I was fine to pop my feet in for a minute and then pull them out, enjoying the coolness as the water evaporated. We did spend most of Saturday indoors, in the air conditioning, in my parents bedroom with the blinds and curtains closed (what is the difference between curtains and drapes, anyway?), fan going, as we watched Shrek, Shrek 2, Cars, How to Train Your Dragon, and How to Train Your Dragon 2. I don’t like to do that, but Little Man just wanted to snuggle, anyway, so it was a good day.

On the house front…Squatch got in to see a house Friday, and we put in an offer. We should hear back Monday. It’s not the little homestead we dream of, but it is only 3 minutes or so to the plant where he works, so it’s better than nothing. Homes have been popping up more this past week than they have in a while. Schools up by us are now out, so we are expecting to see more listings as summer gets into gear. I had found several lots, which Squatch checked out, but with lumber prices going up, and all the modular home builders 9+ months out on delivery, that avenue has passed, and we will not be going that route. I just know we will find something. It just takes patience (which is really wearing thin on all of us), and this seller’s market sucks for buyers. But we will not get into a bidding war, and we are not going to overpay on a home (not THAT much at least) if we can avoid it. So…keep an eye here for what will be happening in that area of our lives.

Sunday, my cousin made brisket, so we went over to have dinner with her and some friends. We offered to bring a salad and dessert. So, I quickly whipped together an easy Ice Cream Sandwich Cake. I had planned on making an Eclair Cake, but we had no milk or graham crackers. I just bought mini Ice Cream Sandwiches, so Ice Cream Sandwich Cake it was. I also made a Cucumber Salad. There were a bunch of tomatoes and onions left diced from the weekend on the food trailer, and if they weren’t used, they would go bad, so I decided a simple salad would work. I’ve never made one before, nor has my mother, so I found a recipe that works over on AllRecipes.

The garden is looking great. I cut a bunch of herbs Saturday, and they are hanging and drying in the little gazebo thingamajigger on the deck. I threw some ash from a fire on the tomatoes and peppers in the garden, and they are all looking awesome. I lost both onions (damn chipmunks!), but everything else seems to have weathered the transplant into the ground. My cucumbers flowered this morning, so I’m really looking forward to seeing how they progress.

Now, don’t forget to follow me on MeWe, where you can get additional content each week, or Odysee, where I’m sharing my podcast and little videos, including “Lettie Loo-ses It!”.  Subscribe to the podcast for my thoughts (and sometimes rants) in 10 minutes or less. I started “Lettie Sings” for you all this week. I will start doing an episode during the week where I just sing something. It will be mostly Irish ballads, but you never know what I will throw in the mix.
