American Sky by Carolyn Dasher
My rating: 4 of 5 stars
I really enjoyed this book.
We go on a journey through 3 generations of women struggling to get by in a man’s world – Adele in WWI, Georgeanne and Vivian in WWII, Ruth & Ivy in Vietnam.
Adele is not your typical young lady, preferring coveralls and trousers, working on cars and tractors, to sitting demurely sipping her tea in the latest dress with her hair perfectly coiffed. Georgeanne takes after her mother, learning to fly planes. Vivian’s story parallels George’s, except she runs away from home to learn to fly. Ruth and Ivy can tell their mother and aunt are hiding something, and all they want to do is get away from home. They do, each in their own way, eventually running into each other in the most unlikely of places.
This is a story NOT just about these women and the difficulties they faced, but about trust, motherly love, growth, and realizing that just because you live with someone doesn’t mean you know everything about that person.
I will absolutely be picking this one up again in the future to read.
(This would have been 5 stars except for the lesbian relationships that were woven in. They were tasteful and not at all graphic, but I don’t care at all for that sort of story.)
