The Harrows of Spring by James Howard Kunstler
My rating: 4 of 5 stars
This book took me 6 weeks to finish. I started it a few days after finishing Book 3 (A History of the Future), and even though the story was still fresh in my mind, I just couldn’t get into The Harrows of Spring.
We get more information about the daily lives of Robert, Loren, and their townsfolk. Daniel, Robert’s son, has decided he wants to start a local newspaper. Bullock’s folks have stopped supporting the town on their supply ship runs, so Daniel suggests the town purchase their own boat (and build a landing) to ensure they don’t have shortages.
A group from Massachusetts comes to town, saying they are forming a new government and wanting the townspeople to buy into their “monopoly money.” You can guess as well as I how well that goes.
There are deaths. A long-lost townsperson makes his way back after several years. The New Faithers help the town out on several occasions.
I just wasn’t impressed. I’m glad it was the last book in the World Made By Hand series, because I’m just tired of everyone!
