When the World Fell Silent by Donna Jones Alward
My rating: 4 of 5 stars
I wasn’t quite sure what to expect with this. The prologue left me wondering…”Just what am I getting myself into, and WHAT is wrong with this character?” I gave it a shot.
The story begins with Nora, a young woman who has chosen a nursing career over marriage and children, to the chagrin of her mother. She is working at the Camp Hospital in Halifax, and is there when there is a large explosion in the bay.
Her story parallels that of Charlotte, a war widow with a young daughter, who has already lost her own family, and proceeds to lose her husband’s family in the explosion.
What connects them? Besides her stay at Camp Hospital after the explosion, where she is treated for her wounds, Charlotte is looking for her young daughter, while Nora searches for her sister, young niece, and parents.
Where the story goes from there, you’ll need to pick it up to find out.
But I’ve now got a story from WWI that I had only hear a bit about from a friend who is from Nova Scotia, and I can guarantee I’ll be picking up some of the reference books the author listed at the end of the story.
