Dirt Therapy

I am so excited, because I planted 60 cloves of Garlic last fall, along with a handful of Egyptian Walking Onions. I don’t know about the onions, but I’ve had 100% germination on the Garlic!!! It’s so dang exciting!

Look at all that garlic!!!

Over the weekend, we did A LOT of work here at The Little Red House. Squatch dug another small garden for me, and Little Man helped by throwing out carrot and onion seeds into it. Half of the giant patch of landscape fabric and wood chips has been pulled up in the middle of the backyard. Little Man helped with raking up the wood chips, and then Squatch seeded it. Here’s hoping we have some new grass growing in the next few weeks. While wandering around the side of the house, what I thought were hostas have turned out to be tulips! We’ve red and yellow ones that are all in bloom now, since this picture was taken. There are several different flowers along the sidewalk to the back door, but it’s a bit of a bummer, because no one ever goes over there.

In addition to the plants, The Falcon, my ’05 Escape, got a new battery and has had some life breathed into it. It’s running fine now, and as it’s practically summer, the fact that the heat doesn’t work is not an issue. That being said, we are looking at getting a new vehicle…especially with Baby Bug on the way. Squatch’s Kia Soul is cramped as it is with the 3 of us, and grocery trips are tough with the little bit of space we have to pack everything into. So, The Falcon shall become our grocery runner for the time being, and if we need something larger, I do have a basket to pop into the hitch should it be needed…or if we go on a longer trip. Here’s the crazy thing…I can buy a 4-5 year old Expedition or F150 for almost the exact same price as a new one…but with over 100k miles. Our prices are insane. Hell, Squatch and I were talking this morning that we could probably get $5-6k for The Falcon if we did a private sale, even though it has 200k miles, rust and dents, the heat doesn’t work, and the speakers are on the fritz. So…keep an eye out here…Something will be in the works in terms of vehicles in the near future.

I did get some last minute planting done this morning. I have Comfrey crowns from Tennessee and Minnesota, and they have gone along the fence in the backyard, next to my garlic bed. I’m hoping they will eventually turn into a wall of comfrey! Last, Little Man helped me plant a Raspberry and a Blackberry in front of the house, on either side of the big picture window we have. They apparently grow 4-6 feet tall, so we are also thinking about adding some shorter bushes along the front of the window, with 2 more berries and bushes on the other half of the house under our big kitchen window.

Tennessee Comfrey ready for the cold Northwoods soil.

I have to tell you…Getting this planting done, my hands in the dirt, feeling and smelling it…It helped SO MUCH with my recovery from all the people-ing at LFTN. Even better…we piled all of our leaves from the fall in the area where my two garden beds are. As I was digging to plant the seeds, I saw so many dang earthworms and beetles. The leaves were breaking down, and creating a gorgeous compost and soil mixture. We’re going to leave the pile of leaves next to the 2 beds we currently have, and let them continue to break down. I cannot WAIT to see how the soil turns out next spring!!!

Also…I did a YouTube live Sunday night, discussing Family Death Planning, walking through the document I created for my family to use. Be sure to check it out on YT and Odysee!

I have gardened about 13 years and never planted garlic until the fall before last – it is so easy! I wonder why I did not try before then. All of my bulbs from last fall are coming up very beautifully, and the garlic that I harvested last summer has stayed great in a box in the garage until I need it.
I also planted some comfrey this spring – my only hope is that the deer don’t eat it while it is young.

I’m just so gosh darn excited that the garlic came up! I’m hoping the comfrey takes, and that I have decent luck with the carrots & onions. This is only my second year gardening, so fingers crossed!!!
