The Small Things

The Small Things

Today’s devotion was on the small things. The author quoted James 2:27: “Every good and perfect gift is from above.”

Yesterday, Squatch, Little Man, and I loaded up in the car and made the 5 hour drive north. As we drove, we chatted and sang songs, Little Man moo-ed at all the cows he could see from his window, and he also read himself some of his books (just babbling, but it’s the cutest thing ever!). We stopped after two hours at a big WalMart, parking at the back of the lot, where there was a big grassy area between it and the road. Little Man had so much fun running around, and I decided it was close enough to lunchtime, so I pulled out his chicken nuggets and a string cheese, threw my jacket on the grass, and we sat and had a little picnic. It was Little Man’s first picnic, and he was loving the novelty of being able to sit in the grass and eat. Squatch and I just sat there, enjoying the sun and each other’s presence, smiling as Little Man waved at all the cars that passed by.

We spent a few hours this morning out in the yard here at Granma and Granpa’s. Granpa tilled out the furrows for the new garden, so today was fence day. Squatch and Granpa were driving the posts into the ground. I kept an eye on Little Man as he wandered, playing with his trucks, going on his slide, taking his blue ball and rolling it down the hill. Granma came out after finishing up cleaning up the breakfast dishes, and she took over sitting with Little Man while I was able to focus on the men. I had already helped with measurements and laying out where the first row of posts were going; I was then able to focus on the other three sides of the garden. In no time at all, we finished the main fence, and then it was lunch and naptime. Once I got Little Man down, I headed back out, to find that the shorter posts for the outer fence were breaking as Squatch was driving them into the earth; one broke when Granpa dropped it! We pulled them out and made a new plan to get different ones, and I again helped plan out where the new ones would go, and how many we would need. Since we were SOL with the fence, the men are now working on finishing the hot house, installing the windows.

It’s days like these that I love the most. Taking the time to be with family. Watching Little Man as he sees everything with wonder and amazement. Just being outside. It truly is the little things in life that make it. Those things that are given to us by God, and usually go unnoticed. Take some time to just sit back and relax, enjoy what is going on around you. And don’t forget to say a quick thank you.
