Childhood Memories

Childhood Memories

We took a trip to the pumpkin patch this morning. This was Little Man’s second trip; we went last October to the big one near where we were living. There was a big difference between the two patches – the one we visited today is teeny tiny. However, we had such a fun time today! There were two other families there, and we all had little ones, so we didn’t have to worry about the kids getting bowled over by bigger kids as they wandered around the petting farm.

When we walked up, we were greeted by thousands of pumpkins! Little Man immediately ran towards them; he wanted them all! We stopped by the “How Tall This Fall” measurement – Little Man is a bit over 2.5 feet tall, Squatch is almost 7 feet, and Mummy is about 5.5 feet. Next year, we will measure again. 🙂 The petting farm was cute, with a calf, two sheep, a llama, a handful of ducks and chickens, several goats, and a ton of rabbits. Little Man was amazed when a goat walked out and pooped right in front of him. He wanted to climb in their pen and climb around with them on their little playground. There was an old tractor for the kids to climb on and pretend to drive – Little Man did not want to leave it alone! We got the complete opposite reaction was when we went to the corn bin – he absolutely did NOT want to be in there and hollered the whole time.

We would have loved to go on a hayride, or see the pumpkin chunkin’, but unfortunately, those are only on weekends. The farm had a bunch of those cut outs for you to take your picture in – cow, duck, and pig, two scarecrows, and several others. When I saw them, I was brought back to when I was little and took my picture next to one that looked like Dolly Parton, except she had pumpkins for boobs! I wish Little Man were a bit bigger, so he could enjoy more of the farm, like I did as a kid. I always enjoyed checking out the pumpkins, feeling them to see which one I wanted, and was not too heavy for me to pick up, and petting the different animals. I would have liked some apple cider donuts, but they don’t sell them. The orchard is still young, so there are not a lot of apples they sell, nor do they have cider. You can pick your own apples though, but we were not interested in that this trip.

I have not gone apple picking in years, so that is still on the list of things to do. Because we did the pumpkin patch this year and last year, next year we will definitely do the apple orchard. Little Man will be big enough to help pick apples, and will enjoy a hayride. When I was a kid, we always went to one orchard that did a hayride to and from the actual orchard. It was so much fun to sit on the benches in the back of the big wagon, watching the horse’s tails swish, hearing their hooves as they clip-clopped along the gravel path. Then walking up and down the rows of apple trees looking for the “perfect” tree, and pulling the best looking ones off the branches until I filled my little pail. Those apples always tasted so much better than what we could get in the stores, and it was because I picked them out and picked them from the tree. The smell of the freshly baked apple cider donuts, eating them warm right out of the ovens; I remember it to this day! This is what I cannot wait to introduce to Little Man.
