A few months ago, we made the decision to leave the Chicago suburbs and head towards NW Illinois, with the goal of ending up in either Iowa or Wisconsin. Squatch got a new job in Dubuque, which enabled us to cut ties back in the burbs and move out this way. I had been working part-time downtown since going back to work last fall after maternity leave for Little Man. It was truly bittersweet to leave my job after 5 years, but I had been ready to leave for a while; I just never had a reason to go.

We are lucky that my parents have a lake house out this way, so we have been able to live rent-free while we look for a place. Galena, Illinois, is AMAZING. We adore being out here, and love the country and views. What we don’t love is how ridiculous Illinois politics have gotten. Gas taxes have doubled to 30 cents/gallon, income tax is ridiculous, and property taxes are sky-rocketing, among others. We know we want a state that offers more liberty to its citizens, so our sights have turned to Iowa and Wisconsin.
